According to head coach Ron Wilson, defenceman Dion Phaneuf could be back in the Leafs lineup as early as tomorrow night, when they host the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Leafs' captain has been out of the lineup since suffering a deep leg laceration in a 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 2, when Phaneuf got tangled in the corner with Ottawa's Peter Regin. He needed assistance to leave the ice.
The cut was so deep, doctors needed to perform exploratory surgery to fully determine the extent of the damage caused by the skate cut on the inside of his left leg, just above the knee. Doctors discovered a slight nick in his Medial Collateral Ligament which required a couple of stitches to repair.
Phaneuf had no goals and four assists in 11 games prior to the injury, and had a minus-6 rating. Heading into Wednesday's game against the Penguins, the Leafs had just five wins in 15 games with him out of the lineup.
