The Detroit Red Wings have lost one of their top defencemen.

Brad Stuart suffered a broken jaw after a blindside hit by Calgary's Tom Kostopoulos midway through the third period of Friday's Detroit victory and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Kostopoulos was assessed a two-minute roughing penalty on the play and could face more discipline from the league.

Doctors in Vancouver, where the Red Wings play next, looked at Stuart's injury on Saturday morning and determined that surgery was not necessary.

Stuart joins Pavel Datsyuk (hand), Dan Cleary (ankle), Mike Modano (wrist) and Valtteri Filppula (groin) on the Red Wings' injury list.
