SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Sharks have hired Jim Johnson as an assistant coach in the latest move to reshape Todd McLellan's staff.

The announcement Tuesday comes a day after the Sharks hired Hall of Fame defenceman and former Stanley Cup winning coach Larry Robinson as associate coach. The main role for both will be on the defence and penalty kill.

Johnson was a defenceman for 14 years in the NHL. He most recently was an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals. He also served as an assistant with Tampa Bay in 2010 and interim head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in 1999-00.

The Sharks had the second worst penalty kill record last season and were knocked out by St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs.
