The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Thursday that forward Matt Read will be out for six weeks after suffering torn rib cage muscles in a game on Wednesday night against Pittsburgh.

It's a big loss for the Flyers, as Read has been playing on Philadelphia's second line with Danny Briere and Ruslan Fedotenko.

The 24-year-old is in his second season with the Flyers, and has seven goals and six assists in 18 games. The native of Ilderton, Ontario had 24 goals and 23 assists in 79 games during his rookie campaign last season.

In other Flyers injury news, general manager Paul Holmgren said that Scott Hartnell (broken foot) is improving, and will likely be out for another five to seven days.

Holmgren also discussed defenceman Andrej Meszaros (sprained shoulder), explaining that he "saw the doctor (on Thursday) and will be allowed to take part in limited practice with the team. (He's) still out for 7-10 days."
