Highly sought-after college free agent defenceman Dan DeKeyser has chosen to sign with the Detroit Red Wings.

The top NCAA prospect from Western Michigan University signed an entry-level contract with the team on Friday, choosing the Red Wings over several others including the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 23-year-old Michigan native spent the past three seasons with the Western Michigan Broncos. This past season, DeKeyser appeared in 35 games, notching two goals and 13 assists and finishing second on the team with 56 blocked shots.  He was a CCHA All-Conference First Team selection as voted on by the 11 CCHA head coaches and was also honoured as the CCHA's best defensive defenceman for the second consecutive season.
