Winnipeg Jets draft pick Jacob Trouba has chosen to leave school and turn professional.

The 19-year-old defenceman agreed to terms on a new contract with the club Tuesday evening.

Trouba played 37 games with the University of Michigan Wolverines this season, recording 12 goals and 17 assists along with 88 penalty minutes. He was named to the 2013 CCHA All-Rookie Team and was also named Best Offensive defenceman for the CCHA.

Trouba has won three medals for Team USA during his career, most recently a gold medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. He also took home a gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey U-18 Championships and a silver medal in the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

Trouba was drafted by the Jets in the first round (ninth overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
