Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Avalanche will retire the jersey No. 52 of former defenceman Adam Foote some time next season.

The club announced the move on Friday, saying that the 41-year-old will become the fifth member of the exclusive club, joining Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy and Ray Bourque as ex-players who have seen their jerseys raised to the rafters.

Foote last suited up two seasons ago, a campaign limited to 47 games due to a leg injury. He departed the league as the last remaining active player to have worn a Quebec Nordiques uniform.

Originally a second-round draft pick of Quebec back in 1989, Foote made his debut with the team in 1991 and spent his first 13 seasons with the franchise, including its relocation to Denver. After the lockout in 2004-05, he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets and played there until he was traded back to the Avalanche on February 26, 2008 for draft picks.

Of the 1,154 NHL games in which he appeared, all but 187 of them were with the Nordiques/Avalanche franchise. He totaled 56 goals and 203 assists with Colorado, and appeared in more regular-season (967) and playoff games (170) than any defenseman in franchise history.

Foote served as Colorado captain in his final two seasons, and also won a Gold Medal in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Olympic Games as a member of Team Canada.

Prior to moving from Quebec City, the Nordiques retired the jerseys of Michel Goulet, Peter Stastny, Marc Tardif and J.C. Tremblay.
