Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe issued some clarification and an apology on the team's website on Wednesday for remarks he made regarding their fanbase in Monday's news conference introducing Craig MacTavish as general manager.

"We have two types of fans," he said on Monday. "We have paying customers and we have people that watch the game that we still care about, but certainly the people who go to the games and support, we spend a lot of time talking to them, delivering our message."

Many in the local media took the quotes to task, interpreting Lowe's words as meaning that fans who buy tickets to Rexall Place carry more weight with the organization.

"First of all, we appreciate and are grateful to every one of our fans who cheer for us through good times and bad," Lowe said in an online video statement on edmontonoilers.com.

"We understand that we see many of our fans at Rexall Place and we have hundreds of thousands of fans that never get to Rexall Place. We appreciate every fan. I did not make that clear yesterday and if I offended anyone, I apologize."

With their playoffs hopes dwindling, the Oilers fired general manager Steve Tambellini on Monday and replaced him with MacTavish. The Oilers are currently eight points out of a playoff spot with six games remaining.

"Yesterday was a day full of excitement and passion and emotion and I must admit my emotion ran a little high," added Lowe in the video statement.

"Now we look to the future. We've got some great pieces in place. We've got a world class management staff with the dedication to get the Oilers back to where they deserve - in the playoffs - and we'll get it done."
