Edmonton Oilers centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins underwent successful shoulder surgery in Cleveland on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum.

On the weekend, the Oilers announced that Nugent-Hopkins would be out for the season and have his shoulder examined with surgery a likely possibility.

"It's something that's been nagging at me for a couple years," said Nugent-Hopkins. "It got a little bit worse and it's something that has to be taken care of eventually. We all decided it was time."

Nugent-Hopkins missed 20 games last season due to the same injury and then had to undergo some rehab before joining Canada's entry at the World Junior Hockey Championship in December.

"The plan was to get (the surgery) done before the season ends, so I'm recovered and good to go before next season," Nugent-Hopkins added.
