The New York Islanders may be in search for a new captain next season.

According to Newsday, sources say defenceman Mark Streit has turned down the team's best offer and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 5.

Last season, the native of Bern, Switzerland scored six goals and added 21 assists for 27 points in 48 games.

The 35-year-old veteran missed the entire 2011-12 season with a shoulder injury.

Originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 2004, Streit signed with the Islanders as an unrestricted free agent in 2008.
