The Dallas Stars announced on Tuesday that they will retire Mike Modano's number 9 at a ceremony next season.

The team said that Modano will be honoured before a game on March 8, 2014 against the Minnesota Wild.

Modano is the top American-born scorer in NHL history. He retired after 21 seasons following the 2010-11 campaign with 561 goals and 1374 points while playing all but one year with the Minnesota North Stars-Dallas Stars franchise.

The Michigan native played his final season with the Detroit Red Wings.

"Mike Modano is a once-in-a-generation player and an American hockey icon," said Stars President and CEO Jim Lites in a statement. "His contributions to our team, including winning the Stanley Cup and helping build hockey in Texas are immeasurable. We're proud of everything Mike accomplished in a Stars uniform and are honored that his number 9 will hang in our rafters."

Modano retired in 23rd place on the all-time goal scoring list, and was 22nd in points. He won the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999.
