The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Paul Ranger to a one-year contract worth around $1 million.

The 28-year-old spent last season with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, where he played 51 games and had eight goals and 17 assists.

Ranger is a veteran of five NHL seasons, all with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was out of hockey between 2010-12 for personal reasons, and returned to the game after signing with the Marlies last August.

He was a sixth-round pick of the Lightning in 2002.
