The New York Islanders are holding a news conference on Monday where the team will introduce star centre John Tavares as their 14th captain in franchise history.

The Mississauga, Ontario native assumes the captaincy after the offseason departure of defenceman Mark Streit - who's now with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Tavares, 22, was third in the NHL with 28 goals last season and led the Islanders with 47 points in 48 games to help the team secure their first post-season berth in six years.

He also ranked in the top 10 in the league in even-strength goals (19), power-play goals (nine) and game-winning goals (five), earning a nomination for the Hart Trophy as most valuable player to his team.

In 291 career NHL games with the Islanders, Tavares has 112 goals and 249 points. The Islanders drafted Tavares first overall in the 2009 draft.
