The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that veteran defenceman Joni Pitkanen will miss the entirety of the 2013-14 NHL season with a major heel injury.

The 29-year-old Finn suffered a broken left calcaneus bone on April 2nd against the Capitals and missed the Hurricanes' final 13 games of the season.

Pitkanen, the former Flyer and Oiler, is entering his sixth season with the Hurricanes, having come over in a trade with Edmonton for Erik Cole.

The native of Oulu, Finland has 57 goals and 225 assists in 535 career NHL games.

Pitkanen represented Finland at the 2010 Olympics.
