For the first time in 20 years, Martin Brodeur will not start in net for the New Jersey Devils when they open the season on Thursday.

Cory Schneider, who was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks at this summer's NHL Draft, will get the start against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brodeur, whose father Denis passed away last week, holds the NHL record of starting in 18 consecutive season openers with the same team.

Reports indicate Brodeur will start against the New York Islanders on Friday.
