San Jose Sharks defenceman Dan Boyle left injured in the first period Tuesday night in a game against the St. Louis Blues.

Boyle was hit from behind by Blue forward Maxim Lapierre and his head struck the glass.

The veteran defenceman was stretchered off of the ice.

Boyle was alert and responsive on his way to a local hospital where he will spend the night, according to Sharks coach Todd McClellan.

In five games this season, the 16-year veteran has a goal and an assist.
