Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi is out indefinitely with a broken ankle that will require surgery.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said after Monday's win over the Carolina Hurricanes that there was no timetable for Scuderi's return.

Bylsma said the 34-year-old veteran would have surgery "later this week."

Scuderi missed a game for the first time since the 2009-10 season after being injured Saturday in a collision with Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson.

He returned to Pittsburgh as an unrestricted free agent, signing a four-year deal in July after four seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. He played for the Penguins from 2003-09, winning a Stanley Cup. He also won a Cup with LA.

Scuderi has seven goals and 80 assists in 596 NHL games.
