WINNIPEG -- It's been a pretty big day for Nic Petan.

Hours after scoring the winning goal in Canada's 5-3 victory over Slovakia at the world junior hockey championship at Malmo, Sweden, Petan and the Winnipeg Jets agreed on a three-year, two-way, entry level contract with an average annual value of US$925,000.

Petan, 18, has 66 points (20 goals, 46 assists) in 32 games with the Western Hockey League's Portland Winterhawks this season. He is currently second in league scoring.

The Delta, B.C., native has played 167 career WHL games, all with Portland, with 222 career points (80 goals, 142 assists) and 95 career penalty minutes.

He was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2013 NHL draft.
