Steven Stamkos is the 10th captain in Tampa Bay Lightning history.

The team announced that the 24-year-old forward had been named captain prior to Thursday night's home game with the Buffalo Sabres. The team's previous captain, Martin St. Louis, was traded to the New York Rangers on Wednesday prior to the 3pm trade deadline.

Stamkos made his return to the line-up on Thursday night after missing 45 games, as well as the Olympics, due a broken leg incurred on a November 11 game against the Boston Bruins.

The Markham, Ontario native is in his sixth NHL season. He is a two-time All-Star and a two-time winner of the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for leading the league in goals scored.

In the 17 games prior to his injury, Stamkos had 14 goals and nine assists.
