- OLYMPIC DEBUT
- 1924 Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France
- ORIGINS
- Hockey has been played at the Winter Olympics since 1924. All players in the communist system were "amateurs," and the USSR fielded the best the country had to offer. The best Americans, Swedes, Finns, and Canadians were professionals and barred from competition. The 1998 Games in Nagano were the first to allow NHL players for a 'dream tournament.' Women's hockey has been played at the Winter Olympics since 1998.
