The following cities have submitted formal bids to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee executive board will meet in June 2006 to decide whether to accept all the applicants or trim the field to a short list of finalists. The host city will be chosen by the International Olympic Committee in Guatemala in 2007.
Almaty, Kazakhstan - first time applicant for the Olympic Games.
Borjomi, Georgia - first time applicant for the Olympic Games.
Jaca, Spain - in 2002, the Spanish Olympic Commitee choose Jaca as the country's main candidate for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. However, the IOC dropped them from the short list of candidates; the city also attempted to mount a bid for the 2002 Winter Games.
Pyeongchang, South Korea - was among the three finalists for the 2010 Winter Games along with Vancouver and Salzburg. Was leading after the first ballot but failed to consolidate that lead and finished second to Vancouver on the second vote.
Salzburg, Austria - was among the three finalists for the 2010 Winter Games along with Vancouver and Pyeongchang. Received the fewest votes on the first ballot and was subsequently dropped off the list; submitted a bid for the 2006 Winter Games but the Austrian Olympic committee chose to support a joint bid by Klagenfurt along with Italy and Slovenia as the country's candidate.
Sochi, Russia - was an unsuccessful candidate for the 2002 Olympics.
Sofia, Bulgaria - was among four finalists for the 1994 Winter Olympics with Lillehammer, Ostersund and Anchorage. Finished fourth in first round balloting and was dropped from further consideration; was among seven finalists for the 1992 Winter Olympics with Albertville, Falun, Lillehammer, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Anchorage and Berchtesgaden. Led after the first ballot before slipping to second on subsequent votes eventually losing out to Albertville on the fifth ballot.
