Paris was given a second chance to play host to the Olympics in 1924. The Summer Games also coincided with the first Winter Olympics, which were held in Chamonix, France. Among the traditions introduced at these games was the Closing Ceremony ritual of raising three flags - the flag of the International Olympic Committee, the flag of the host nation and the flag of the next host nation.
The Games feature American sprint swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, who won three gold medals and is known for his silver screen talents in the role of Tarzan.
The Paris Olympics is also said to be the idea behind the award winning movie Chariots of Fire, based on the feats of British sprint champions Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell.
The 1924 games are also referred to as Nurmi's Olympics, after Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi wins five gold medals in six days. That was in addition to the three he captured in 1920. Nurmi participated in the 1,500 and 5,000 m finals, which were less than an hour apart, and in the 3,000 m, both individual and team events, as well as the cross-country race.
The 1924 games would also mark the first time Canada did not win a gold medal in Olympic competition. It also marked the first time that Canadians did not win a medal in track and field competition since 1896.
