FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Regina's Reuben Ross and Montreal's Meaghan Benfeito are headed to the finals on men's three-metre and women's tower respectively following Friday's semifinals at the U.S. Grand Prix diving competition.
The event is the final opportunity for Canadian divers to earn qualifying points for the Olympic trials May 25-27 in Montreal.
On women's 10-metre tower, Benfeito placed second in her semifinal heat with 353.85 points, behind Australia's Melissa Wu at 365.80. Australia's Brittany Broben was third and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., was fifth and did not advance to Sunday's final.
Only the top-three in each of the two semis reaches the final.
On men's three-metre, Ross was third in his semifinal at 429.55. China's Shixin Li was first at 483.15 and Alejandro Daniel Islas Arroyo of Mexico second at 439.90. Francois Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., just missed a berth in the final placing fourth at 418.00.
