Germany's Carina Vogt has won the first Olympic gold medal in women's ski jumping after competition Tuesday at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Centre in Sochi, Russia.

She set the best scores on both first and second round jumps, finishing with a combined total of 247.4 points.

The silver medal went to Daniella Iraschko-Stolz of Austria, with a combined score from both rounds of 246.2. Coline Mattel of France scored 245.2.

Sara Takanashi of Japan finished her second jump to garner a total score of 243.0.

Canadian Atsuko Tanaka jumped 95 metres in the second round, scoring a combined total of 231.3. Fellow Canadian Taylor Henrich flew 96 metres, and scored 230.4 points.

Reigning World Cup champion Sarah Hendrickson of the United States scored a final total of 217.6. The result comes from a strong performance considering five months ago, Hendrickson had surgery to repair damage to her knee.

Ski jumping has been part of the Olympic program since the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, France. However, Sochi 2014 marks the first time women's ski jumping has been on the Olympic program.
