CANET, France -- Olympic-bound swimmers Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., Barbara Jardin of Montreal and Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., each collected a medal on Thursday to conclude the second of three stops on the Mare Nostrum circuit.
In the men's 100 freestyle, Hayden clocked 49.00 seconds to win the silver medal. He was edged at the finish by Hanser Garcia of Cuba, swimming out of lane eight, first in 48.89. Yannick Agnel of France was third in 49.02.
`'There were a lot fast people in this race and that's why I came over here," said Hayden, the 2007 world champion and runner-up at last year's worlds in the 100 freestyle. `'I knew Yannick was going to be tough and I was really happy that I held him off. I went faster here than in Barcelona on the weekend and I just want to keep getting better."
In the women's 400 freestyle, Camille Muffat of France set a meet record clocking 4:02.97 with Jardin second in 4:09.46.
Two Canadians battled it out for the bronze in the women's 200 butterfly. Lacroix prevailed in 2:11.05 just ahead of Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge in fourth at 2:11.61. Martina Granstrom of Sweden was the winner in 2:08.96 and Lara Grangeon of France second in 2:10.55.
There were three more fourth place finishes for Canadian women.
In the 50 butterfly, Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., was fourth with Savard fifth and Noemie Thomas of Vancouver seventh. In the 100 breaststroke, Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., took fourth with Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of Ottawa eighth. In the women's 100 freestyle, Victoria Poon of Montreal was fourth with Heather MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont., seventh.
Other women's results were Lauren Lavigna of Vancouver fifth in the 200 backstroke and Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg sixth in the 50 backstroke.
Other men's results, Tobias Oriwol of Toronto and Charles Francis of Cowansville, Que., were fifth and sixth in the 200 backstroke, Francis was also seventh in the 50 backstroke and David Sharpe of Halifax seventh in the 200 butterfly.
The third and final stop on the circuit is Saturday and Sunday in Monte Carlo.
