SOPOT, Poland -- Nadine Broersen of the Netherlands won the pentathlon at the world indoor championships, containing the damage in the closing 800 metres to beat Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton on Friday.

Alina Fodorova of Ukraine took third place.

Broersen based her gold-medal performance on great high jumping, and finished with 4,830 points, while Theisen-Eaton, from Humboldt, Sask., set a national record of 4,768. Fodorova had a total of 4,724.

While Theisen-Eaton took silver, her husband Ashton Eaton was dominating the men's heptathlon, already poised to defend his title and with a good shot of setting a world record on the closing day of the seven-event competition on Saturday.

At last year's outdoor world championships, Eaton won the decathlon while his newlywed wife took silver in the heptathlon.
