Alex Ovechkin confirmed Friday he injured his knee on a hit by Nazem Kadri in the Washington Capitals' first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ovechkin exited Game 5 of the series between the Capitals and Leafs in the first period on April 21 but returned for the start of the second. He told reporters on Friday he sustained a hamstring in Game 3 of his team's series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Capitals veteran said he will not surgery for either injury.

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation announced Thursday that Ovechkin played through "pain numbing injections" in the postseason. The 31-year-old confirmed that on Friday, saying he took injections a couple of times when he felt he needed to.

Ovechkin scored three goals in four games against the Maple leafs before the Kadri hit, but only scored two more goals in his next nine games. He finished with eight points in 13 games as the Capitals were eliminated in Game 7 by the Penguins on Wednesday.

He was moved down to the Capitals' third line during the second round series.
