The Pac-12, one of the biggest conferences in all of collegiate sports, has announced a future foray into the wide world of esports.

The conference held its annual board meeting this week and afterwards confirmed their intention to host live competitions on the Pac-12 Network featuring teams in the region, culminating with the Pac-12 championship.

“Esports is a natural fit for many of our universities located in the technology and media hubs of the country,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said. “Pac-12 Networks’ commitment to innovation as well as its natural tie to our universities and established media platform make it the perfect organization to develop the framework for eSports intercollegiate competition.”

UC Irvine represents the most prominent esports force in the conference, recently announcing plans to give out scholarships for competitive gaming. There are 12 schools in total in the Pac-12 located across the pacific northwest of the United States.

The initiative comes on the heels of the Big 10 network airing a rivalry League of Legends match between Michigan State and Ohio State at PAX East in April.
