INDIANAPOLIS - IndyCar has reduced a penalty levied against Helio Castroneves for triggering an accident on the first lap of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis last month.

Castroneves was initially penalized 8 points for hitting Scott Dixon in the first corner of the May 9 race. After a review by IndyCar last weekend, the series on Wednesday reduced the penalty to 3 points.

Castroneves' penalty had been for avoidable contact, and IndyCar president of competition Derrick Walker said the reduction was to put it in line with previous penalties.

Castroneves now trails Team Penske teammate and series leader Juan Pablo Montoya by 65 points at the season's halfway point headed into Saturday night's race at Texas Motor Speedway. Castroneves has a series-leading four victories at Texas.

IndyCar also fined Stefano Coletti of KV Racing $10,000 and placed him on probation for three races for failing to slow down during a full course caution last weekend at Detroit.

Sage Karam of Chip Ganassi Racing was placed on probation for five races for avoidable contact Sunday at Detroit.

IndyCar also fined a fueler from Chip Ganassi Racing $1,000 for having a helmet visor up and a Team Penske crew member $500 for not wearing a headsock.

Honda was docked 20 manufacturer points for the engine failing in Carlos Munoz's car ahead of its 2,500-mile life cycle.
