Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Robert Bortuzzo has been suspended two games, without pay, for interference on New Jersey Devils forward Jaromir Jagr.

The NHL cited the "extreme lateness" and "predatory nature" of the collision as the reason for the suspension. The league said Jagr was "defenceless" at the moment of contact.

The incident occurred at 17:57 of the second period of Tuesday's game at Consol Energy Center.

Bortuzzo hit Jagr into the boards with 2:03 remaining in the second period. Jagr did not return to the game. No penalty was called on the play.

The Penguins won the game 1-0.
