Two multi-billion dollar proposals for the redevelopment of Ottawa's LeBreton flats were officially unveiled to the public by the National Capital Commission on Tuesday, with both of them including plans for NHL-sized arenas.

Bids from Rendezvous LeBreton group (which includes owner Eugene Melnyk and Senators Sports & Entertainment - SSE) and Devcore Candarel DLS group were made available after months of speculation as part of a bidding process that began in September 2014.

Both proposals also feature plans for a new Public Library, green space and new residential properties. The winning bid won't be announced until early 2017.

Firestone: Not surprised to see that the other bid included plans for an NHL Arena

Original Senators Owner, Bruce Firestone, joins Ian and Shawn to talk about his tenure and the LeBreton Flats bids.

"The Major Event Centre will host all home games for the Ottawa Senators," said Melnyk in a statement. "But more importantly, we forecast more than 70 per cent of the 175 annual events at this world class venue will be non-hockey events including cultural performances, live music concerts and family entertainment."

Devcore Candarel DLS group, has called its concept "Lebreton re-imagined," planning to turn 55 acres into a multi-use space over the next 15 years, with a Ripley's Aquarium, the world's largest skateboard park and a skydiving wind tunnel in addition to the new NHL-sized rink.

The Senators have played at the Canadian Tire Centre - in the west-end community of Kanata - since it opened as the Corel Centre back in 1996.

Prior to that, the team played at the Civic Centre - shared with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's - from 1993 to 1995.
