DETROIT - The Ottawa Senators might be getting back in a groove. The Detroit Red Wings, meanwhile, are still stuck in a rut.

Kyle Turris and Matt Puempel scored in first and second periods and Bobby Ryan added an empty-net goal in the final minute, helping Ottawa beat Detroit 3-1 on Friday night.

"We needed it," Ryan said. "We've got to start to get on a roll. It's two points in a division road game, a four-point game."

Andrew Hammond made 29 saves for the Senators, who have won two straight after a four-game winless stretch that followed a 3-1 start this season.

The offensively challenged Red Wings pulled Jimmy Howard to add an extra skater with 2-plus minutes left, but couldn't score before Ryan restored Ottawa's two-goal lead with 55 seconds remaining.

Detroit, which has been held to only one goal four times over its last six games, has won only one game in a seven-game slump after opening with three straight wins.

Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill blamed his team's inability to get closer to the net offensively and to keep opponents away from Howard.

"We talk about owning each crease and we didn't own each crease," Blashill said. "They score two net-front goals and we couldn't get there."

Ottawa limited Detroit's quality scoring chances in the third, helping it improve to 4-1 on the road this season.

Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg scored on the second of two power plays with a two-man advantage late in the second period. Howard stopped 32 shots for the Red Wings.

Ottawa was in control early and its pressure was rewarded when Turris scored with 1:14 left in the first after defenceman Danny DeKeyser whiffed on a chance to clear the puck away from the front of the net.

Hammond, who played his second game of the season, made a glove save to stop Zetterberg's slap shot on the first of Detroit's two 5-on-3 power plays in the second.

"I was able to settle in pretty early and the team played pretty well in front of me," Hammond said.

Ottawa took a two-goal lead on Puempel's goal in front of the net off Ryan's no-look pass.

"Bobby made a great play," Puempel said. "I was just trying to get a stick on it and it managed to squeeze through on the short side."

Zetterberg scored from the right circle off a redirected shot with 3 minutes left in the second period, pulling the Red Wings within goal. He lamented that Detroit didn't make the most of the 5-on-3 opportunities.

"In a game like this, you have to take advantage of that and score more goals," Zetterberg said.

NOTES: Ottawa forwards Mike Hoffman (lower body) and Curtis Lazar (upper body) along with Detroit defencemen Mike Green (upper body) and Kyle Quincey (concussion), were scratched with injuries. ... Zetterberg ended a six-game skid without a goal after scoring twice during the team's 3-0 start. ... Turris has scored five of his six goals on the road this season. ... Ottawa hosts Detroit on Saturday night.
