SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Joe Veleno didn't take long to find the scoresheet in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 15-year-old centre, who was the first player in Quebec to be granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada, scored his first career goal in his debut as his Saint John Sea Dogs downed the visiting Halifax Mooseheads 5-2 on Saturday.

Sam Povorozniouk had two goals and an assist for the Sea Dogs (1-0-0) as Daniel Del Paggio scored once and set up two more. Matthew Highmore tacked on a goal and an assist to round out the offence.

Veleno is just the fifth player to ever be given his status, joining John Tavares (2005), Aaron Ekblad (2011), Connor McDavid (2012) and Sean Day (2013).
