LONDON - Brazil midfielder Ramires left Chelsea on Wednesday as compatriot Alexandre Pato arrived in London to join with the Premier League champions.

After more than five years at Chelsea, Ramires signed for Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning. The transfer fee, reported by China's official Xinhua News Agency to be around 25 million pounds ($36 million), is a record for Chinese football.

The 28-year-old Ramires will be coached by former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu.

Chelsea is set to add Pato to its squad until the end of the season. The forward flew in from Brazil to complete an expected loan move from Corinthians.

The former AC Milan player recently refused an offer from a Chinese club that wanted to pay him more than $1 million a month. He said he wanted to go back to Europe.

"I am so happy. Chelsea is my new home," the 26-year-old Pato said as he arrived at Heathrow Airport. "Thanks Chelsea for the support and thanks for my fans ... I need to play.

"I don't know what to say because I am so happy. I am very anxious. I want to know my new friends, the new players, and the team. I really want to play for Chelsea."

Chelsea, which is yet to comment on Pato's deal, is struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and is heavily reliant on forward Diego Costa.

England winger Andros Townsend moved to Newcastle for a reported fee of 12 million pounds ($17 million) after his career stalled at Tottenham.

Newcastle is revamping its midfield, having already signed Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea and Henri Saivet from Bordeaux in the January transfer window.

Townsend has struggled to replicate the form he produced in late 2013, when he earned a call-up to the England team.

"Andros is a winger with an old-fashioned style. He can play on the right or the left, is two-footed, quick, very direct and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball," Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren said. "He feels he has a lot to prove and I can't wait to see him do that in a Newcastle shirt."
