The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on the 48-hour injured reserve with a sore groin.

General manager Ken Holland made the announcement Saturday afternoon.

Howard was in net for the Red Wings' 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Friday night. Jonas Gustavsson will get his first start of the season Saturday night in the back end of a home-and-home with the Maple Leafs.

Petr Mrazek was called up from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League to play backup.

Howard could be available to play Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
