The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenceman Brendan Smith to a two-year contract.

According to M Live's Ansar Khan, the deal carries an average annual value of $2.75 million.

Smith, 26, scored four goals and nine assists in 76 games with the Red Wings in 2014-15. He was slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Originally selected 27th overall at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Wings, the Mimico, Ont.-native has appeared in 195 career games with the club, tallying 10 goals and 37 assists.

He has also appeared in 24 career playoff games, scoring two goals and three assists.
