The Detroit Red Wings have signed collegiate free agent defenceman Robbie Russo to a two-year entry level contract.

Russo, 22, was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the fourth round (95th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but the two sides could not reach a contract agreement after his senior year with the University of Notre Dame.

In 40 games with the Fighting Irish in 2014-15, the six-foot blueliner scored 15 goals and 26 assists.
