Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons has been suspended three games by the MLB for re-entering the playing field after being ejected on Sunday against the Texas Rangers.

First base coach Tim Leiper was also suspended one game for returning to the dugout during the same incident.

Gibbons, who was also fined $5,000, said he thought the suspension was a little harsh ahead of Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I thought it was a little excessive but what're you gonna do," the Jays manager said. "I've got enough issues to worry about."

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale will take Gibbon's spot for the next three games. "If he goes 3-0 we will switch jobs. Maybe even 2-1."

Gibbons was ejected in the third inning of the bottom of the third of the game after arguing with home plate umpire Dan Iassogna, who thought Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez had yelled at him. He then returned to the field when the benches cleared after Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor punched Jose Bautista in the face after a hard slide in the eighth inning.

"I didn't want to sit here and drink too much wine," Gibbons said after the game. "Ya got to go out there. I'm sure the league will say something about that but it's kind of the manager's responsibility."
