Edmonton Oilers defenceman Matt Benning is believed to have dodged major injury after blocking a shot against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

The Oilers initially feared Benning had suffered a broken foot after he needed help getting off the ice in the third period.

“I don’t want to jump the gun but he looked pretty darn good,” head coach Todd McLellan said Sunday. “He was walking around. He’s got a welt, but it doesn’t look like there’s anything broken. That’s a really good sign for us.”

The 22-year-old owns three goals and 11 assists in 57 games this season. He sits fifth on the Oilers with a plus-10 rating this season.

The Oilers host the L.A. Kings on Tuesday night.
