Former Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz has agreed to a $1.5 million, minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals, according to a report by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.  He will join the team in Major League camp and if he’s not on the 25-man roster on May 1, he can ask for a release.

Buchholz appeared in two games with the Philadelphia Phillies last season, after spending his first 10 seasons with the Red Sox.  He posted a 12.27 ERA and an 0-1 record in his limited appearances.

The 33-year-old missed most of the season after having surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm.

Buchholz’s best season was in 2010 when he finished with a 17-7 record and 2.33 ERA.  He finished sixth in the Cy Young Award balloting at the end of the season.

The two-time All-Star was also 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 2013, helping lead the Red Sox to the World Series title.
