Boston Red Sox third baseman is slated to miss the remainder of the regular season after undergoing shoulder surgery later this week, according to EPSN’s Marly Rivera.

The team announced Monday the slugger would be undergoing surgery to repair a strained left shoulder within the week, but did not provide a timetable.

The surgery ends a disappointing sophomore season for Sandoval in which his conditioning was questioned during spring training and he was benched in favour of Travis Shaw.

Sandoval, 29, played in just three games this season, failing to register a hit in six at-bats. He struck out four times. Last season, Sandoval hit .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI.

The Red Sox signed Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million contract prior to last season.
