PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers turned to an unlikely place to get help for their revamped secondary: Cleveland.

Pittsburgh acquired cornerback Justin Gilbert from the Browns on Saturday hoping the former first-round pick can deliver on the potential he never fully realized in two disappointing years with Cleveland. The Steelers sent a sixth-round pick in 2018 to the Browns in exchange for Gilbert, who had one interception while becoming the latest high-profile selection to flame out for Pittsburgh's perennially rebuilding AFC North rival.

The Steelers are trying to revamp a secondary that finished 30th in the league against the pass last year. They drafted cornerback Artie Burns in the first round and safety Sean Davis in the second round this spring, but Burns was slowed by a quad injury during training camp and didn't make his preseason debut until the finale against Carolina.

Burns is likely to start the season in nickel and dime packages, though Gilbert could be given a chance at starting on the outside opposite veteran William Gay.

Pittsburgh has struggled to find top-end cornerbacks in recent years. Ike Taylor retired in the spring of 2015 and Cortez Allen — who was lavished with a five-year deal on the eve of the 2014 season — lost his confidence, his starting job, and was released in April. Senquez Golson, a second-round pick in 2015, missed all of his rookie season with a shoulder injury and is out indefinitely while recovering from surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his foot.

Gilbert's arrival came the same day Pittsburgh released 2015 fourth-round pick Doran Grant while trimming its roster to 53 players. Grant dealt with his own health issues last year and was limited to three games last fall.

Pittsburgh also released linebacker Steven Johnson, signed as a free agent during the off-season, and sixth-round pick Travis Feeney, slowed by a concussion during camp. The Steelers also cut wide receiver DeMarcus Ayers, a seventh-round pick. Pittsburgh took a flier on Ayers hoping he could make an impact in the return game. Ayers could not, a void Gilbert may have a chance to fill.

Running back Le'Veon Bell moved on to the reserve/suspended by the commissioner list after violating the league's substance abuse policy. Bell will be eligible to return following Pittsburgh's Week 3 meeting with Philadelphia.

Inside linebacker Nate Irving and running back Stevan Ridley were among the players cut by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.

Irving was hobbled by injuries most of last season. Ridley was signed Sunday and played in Thursday night's preseason finale.

To reach the roster limit of 53 players, Indy placed three players — cornerback Tevin Mitchell, outside linebacker Ron Thompson and offensive linemen Hugh Thornton — on injured reserve.

They also waived defensive linemen Sterling Bailey and Kelcy Quarles; linebackers Trevor Bates and Earl Okine; safeties Alden Darby, Lee Hightower and Stefan McClure; cornerbacks Tay Glover-Wright and Christopher Milton; receivers MeKale McKay and Tevaun Smith; and offensive linemen Kitt O'Brien, Adam Redmond, Mitchell Van Dyk and Jeremy Vujnovich.

The New York Jets have cut cornerback Dee Milliner and tight end Jace Amaro, two high draft picks once considered future cornerstones of the franchise.

The team announced the moves Saturday as it closed in on reducing its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit Saturday.

Milliner was the No. 9 overall pick in 2013, but injuries and inconsistency prevented him from living up to expectations. He was waived/injured with an ailing hamstring, meaning he would revert to the Jets' injured reserve list if he clears waivers.

Amaro was a second-rounder in 2014 who had 38 catches for 345 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie before missing all last season with a shoulder injury.

Fullback Tommy Bohanon, linebacker Trevor Reilly and wide receivers Jeremy Ross and Kenbrell Thompkins were among the Jets' other notable cuts earlier in the day.

Former Canadian Football League cornerback Josh Johnson has made Jacksonville's 53-man roster, beating out former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall.

Marshall was one of 16 players waived Saturday as the Jaguars trimmed their roster to the NFL-mandated limit. Also waived: linebacker Thurston Armbrister, defensive tackle Richard Ash, defensive tackle T.J. Barnes, cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun, tight end Braedon Bowman, offensive lineman Kadeem Edwards, safety Josh Evans, receiver Shaq Evans, offensive tackle Rashod Hill, defensive end Tyrone Holmes, receiver Rashad Lawrence, linebacker Sean Porter, guard Pearce Slater, linebacker Jordan Tripp and receiver Shane Wynn.

Undrafted rookie safety Jarrod Wilson beat out Evans, a sixth-round pick in 2013 who started 37 games.

Jacksonville released receiver Arrelious Benn, guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, linebacker Ryan Davis and guard Jacques McClendon.

The Jags also placed defensive tackle Michael Bennett (calf) on injured reserve and cornerback Aaron Colvin on the suspended list.

___

The Panthers waived two 2016 draft picks — cornerback Zack Sanchez and tight end Beau Sandland — to trim their roster to 53 players.

Sanchez was a fifth-round pick and Sandland a seventh.

Backup guard Chris Scott was placed on the reserve/suspended list after being suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the policy on performance enhancing substances.

Also cut were running backs Brandon Wegher and Jalen Simmons, wide receiver Keyarris Garrett, tight ends Eric Wallace and Marcus Lucas, guard David Yankey, defensive ends Larry Webster and Arthur Miley, defensive tackles Kyle Love, Eric Crume and Robert Thomas, linebacker Brian Blechen, cornerback Lou Young and safeties Stevie Brown, Marcus Ball and Travell Dixon.

Wide receiver Kevin Norwood, linebacker Ben Jacobs and offensive tackle Jordan Rigsbee were placed on injured reserve.

___

The Los Angeles Rams have waived 18 players and terminated the contracts of linebacker Akeem Ayers and defensive tackle Cam Thomas.

The Rams announced the roster moves Saturday to reach the 53-man regular-season limit.

The players waived by Los Angeles included several key figures on the team's current season of "Hard Knocks," HBO's NFL reality show. Center Eric Kush, defensive end Ian Seau and receivers Austin Hill and Paul McRoberts all were waived.

Ayers is a Los Angeles native who played at UCLA. Thomas signed with Los Angeles in June after six NFL seasons with San Diego and Pittsburgh.

Los Angeles also placed offensive linemen Garrett Reynolds and Darrell Williams on injured reserve.

___

Colin Kaepernick survived San Francisco's roster cuts on Saturday when the 49ers determined that his ability as a quarterback more than offset any potential distraction over his refusal to stand during the national anthem.

The 49ers announced that Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder will be the team's three quarterbacks to start their first season with Chip Kelly as coach. Kelly had telegraphed that move earlier in the week when he called Kaepernick one of his team's two best quarterbacks.

Kaepernick's status on the team was briefly in question after his anthem protest over racial oppression and police brutality in the United States became public last weekend.

___

The Eagles traded Sam Bradford and released 21 players to reach the 53-man roster limit Saturday.

Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson, 2014 Pro Bowl kicker Cody Parkey, safety Ed Reynolds and linebacker Najee Goode were among the cuts. Philadelphia only has four linebackers on the roster, so it's likely the team will make more moves.

The list includes: LBs Don Cherry, Quentin Gause and Myke Tavarres, S Blake Countess, DT Bruce Gaston, G Darrell Greene, WRs Marcus Johnson, David Watford and Cayleb Jones, C/G Barrett Jones, RBs Byron Marshall and Cedric O'Neal, TEs M.J. McFarland and Chris Pantale, DE Jake Metz, CB JaCorey Shepherd and DT Aziz Shittu.

___

The Green Bay Packers have released three-time Pro Bowler Josh Sitton, making an unexpected change on their offensive line.

The 30-year-old Sitton had started 112 of 121 regular-season games since being drafted in the fourth round in 2008 out of Central Florida. He was one of the leaders on a front five that protected quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Sitton played through injuries, including a torn ligament in his left big toe in 2014. But the Packers have financial decisions to make up front, with the contracts of left tackle David Bakhtiari and left guard T.J. Lang expiring after this season.

Sitton was entering the last year of a five-year, $33.75 million extension signed after the 2011 season. He was due to count $6.85 million against the cap this year.

___

The Minnesota Vikings have let go of three of their eight draft picks, waiving guard Willie Beavers, wide receiver Moritz Bohringer and defensive end Stephen Weatherly in the process of setting the roster for the regular season.

Quarterbacks Joel Stave and Brad Sorensen were among the 20 cuts made Saturday by the Vikings, who also sent their 2017 first-round draft pick and a 2018 fourth-round selection to the Philadelphia Eagles for Sam Bradford. With Teddy Bridgewater on injured reserve and Taylor Heinicke on the non-football injury list, the Vikings have only two quarterbacks for now with Shaun Hill and Bradford.

Beavers was taken in the fourth round out of Western Michigan. Bohringer became the first player in NFL history drafted straight from Europe. Weatherly was a seventh-round pick via Vanderbilt.
