Royals take No. 1 in MLB Power Rankings

The Kansas City Royals have taken over top spot in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Kansas City Royals have taken over top spot in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals.

Among the teams moving up, the Houston Astros rocket up to fourth spot, well ahead of schedule, and both the San Francisco Giants (from 26 to 11) and Miami Marlins (from 29 to 13) are bouncing back from rough starts to the season.

Going the other way, the Atlanta Braves are regressing hard after a quick start, falling from nine to 19, as are the San Diego Padres, down from three to 15.

The Toronto Blue Jays continue to struggle, down a couple of spots to 21 as the losses and injuries start to pile up.

After a suprising power drain in 2014, 1B Eric Hosmer is slugging .540, with a .940 OPS, to lead the Royals offence and the bullpen remains ridiculous, posting a collective 1.08 ERA in 83 2/3 innings.

Lots of injuries for the Dodgers, but it's nice to be able to get regular playing time for Alex Guerrero, who has a 1.165 OPS in 36 at-bats.

For a team with some evident shortcomings, the Yankees have been successful early by shortening games. Relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller have locked down the late innings, allowing 11 hits and no runs, with 49 strikeouts, in 29 combined innings.

1B Joey Votto has been great, but that's to be expected. What's more compelling about the Reds is that SS Zack Cozart has gone from being an easy out to making more solid contact. Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is the only hitter to swing at a higher rate of strikes, while making more frequent contact than Cozart.

What's interesting about the Cubs' relatively successful start to the season is that prized free agent lefty Jon Lester has struggled (4.71 ERA) and ballyhooed rookie 3B Kris Bryant, while generally hitting well (.808 OPS) is still seeking his first home run after 60 major league at-bats.

It's fair to wonder about a team riding the bats of SS Brandon Crawford , CF Angel Pagan and 2B Joe Panik -- since none of those three have a track record of great offensive productivity -- but the Giants have won five straight, the last three by shutout, to move to the north side of .500 for the year.

Just when critics are ready to feast on LF Bryce Harper during a five-game slump in which he goes 1-for-17 (.059), he goes out and blasts three home runs against the Phillies Wednesday to lift his season OPS to .922, which is not bad at all for a 22-year-old.

The Blue Jays have scored more runs than any other team, even more than their shaky pitching staff has allowed, but are on the wrong side of break-even. It's one thing to see LHP Daniel Norris sent to the minors after a 3.86 ERA in five starts, but what do the Jays do with LHP Mark Buehrle and RHP Drew Hutchinson, who have combined for a 7.13 ERA in 11 starts?

Of course the Rockies can hit, but if they are going to get anywhere, they need pitching. Youngsters Tyler Matzek, Eddie Butler and Jordan Lyles have been solid, the rotation needs much better from Opening Day starter Kyle Kendrick and veteran lefty Jorge De la Rosa.
