The MLB free agency period is underway. Teams and players alike are looking to make big splashes during the off-season.

Lefty Leader

The Toronto Blue Jays have their eyes on adding a left-handed leadoff hitter with a strong on-base percentage, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Morosi lists Dexter Fowler and Adam Eaton as two players who would fit the bill for the club. Fowler, a centre fielder, is a free agent after turning down the Chicago Cubs' qualifying offer while Eaton would have to be acquired via trade from the White Sox.

Fowler posted a .393 OBP last season with a .276 average. Eaton's OBP for the season sat at .362, though his average was stronger than Fowler's at .284.

What They'll Make

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports wrote Thursday of what to expect of the contracts of the MLB's top 56 free agents this year.

Heyman expects Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion to take home the second largest contract of any free agent at $92 million over four years. He projects Yoenis Cespedes to make the most with $110 million over four years.

Jose Bautista comes in at ninth on the list, projected to make $54 million over three years - an average of $18 million per season.

Other Blue Jays on the list include Brett Cecil ($18 million over three years), Michael Saunders (projected at $16 million over two years) and Joaquin Benoit ($10 million over two years).

Cash for Cashner

Andrew Cashner is set to join the Texas Rangers on a one-year, $10 million contract, TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Cashner posted a 5-11 record with a 5.25 ERA pitching for the Marlins last season.

Money to Spend?

The New York Yankees cleared $11.5 million per year off the books when they traded catcher Brian McCann to the Houston Astros on Thursday.

Now, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports writes the Yankees have set their sights on a acquiring a big name power hitter to their lineup.

According to sources of Heyman, the Yankees are "seriously looking" at Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Beltran. Other free agents on their watch list include Jose Bautista, Yoenis Cespedes and Mark Trumbo.

The Yankees are also attempting to bring back Aroldis Chapman, according to Heyman.

New York finished fourth in the AL East last season with an 84-78 record.

Focus on Sale

The Atlanta Braves have one name in mind as they look to upgrade their pitching; Chris Sale.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes the Braves are in discussion with the White Sox to acquire Sale, who is under contract for the next three seasons.

O'Brien writes the Braves have checked in on Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chis Archer and Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics, but Sale is the focus.
