SASKATOON - Vladimir Bryukvin scored the winner in the 11th round of the shootout and goaltender Denis Kostin came off the bench to pick up the victory as the Russia Selects downed the Western Hockey League All-Stars 3-2 on Monday in Game 1 of the Subway Super Series.

Alexander Bryntsev and Konstantin Okulov scored in regulation for Russia, which got a 34-save performance from starting netminder Igor Shestyorkin before turning to Kostin for the shootout.

Jake Virtanen and Cole Ully supplied the offence for the WHL while Eric Comrie turned aside 13-of-15 shots in defeat.

Ully looked to have secured the win for the WHL when he made it 2-1 at 17:35 of the third period, but Okulov responded for Russia just over a minute later to force the shootout.

Bryntsev opened the scoring 38 seconds into the game before Virtanen put the WHL on the board at 19:05 of the first period.

With regulation time solving nothing-- and the tournament format bypassing overtime straight into a shootout-- Kostin came in to replace Shestyorkin and stopped eight of the 11 WHL shooters he faced.

Russia's Maxim Mamin was stretchered off the ice early the first period after getting hit into the end boards by Joe Hicketts. Mamin was cutting to the goal on the back hand and wound up crashing full speed behind Comrie after making contact with the WHL defenceman. He laid on the ice until medical attention arrived, but was able to get up on his own before being taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

Game 2 of the Subway Super Series goes Tuesday in Brandon, Man.
