In the wake of Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones being subjected to racist taunts from Boston Red Sox fans at Fenway Park, New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia says that black players "expect" abuse in Boston.

Speaking to Newsday's Erik Boland, the six-time All-Star says he's experienced similar treatment at Fenway Park.

A veteran of 17 MLB seasons, Sabathia told Boland that Boston is the only place in which he's been called the N-word.

The native of Vallejo, California says that black ballplayers are aware of taunts at Fenway and expect them when traveling to Boston.

"We know," Sabathia said. "There's 62 of us. We all know. When you go to Boston, expect it."

Former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells weighed in on Twitter, noting that he was "warned about" Fenway Park as a player.

A Red Sox spokesperson said 34 patrons were ejected from Fenway on Monday night for using "foul language" directed at an Orioles player, but Jones was not named. Jones told reporters that he was "called the N-word a handful of times" during Monday night's game.

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy issued an apology to Jones, saying that his organization is "sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few."

The Orioles and Red Sox continue their series on Tuesday night.
