With the Stanley Cup Playoffs set to begin Wednesday, the IIHF World Championship is not far behind. And as non-playoff teams prepare for the offseason, a number of players are starting to commit to their countries for the tournament. Keep updated with the latest World Championship roster news.

 


Team Canada

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper will take over the top job for Canada at the World Championship, Gerard Gallant, Dave Hakstol and Dave King will serve as assistants.

Six players from the Winnipeg Jets have commited to play in the tournament, with Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey to play for Team Canada, 

Scheifele is coming off a career year, recording 32 goals and 82 points in 79 games this season. Morrissey had six goals and 20 points this season for the Jets.

Ryan O'Reilly of the Buffalo Sabres will play for Team Canada, while teammate Sam Reinhart said he hasn't been contacted by Team Canada, according to a report from the Buffalo News. O'Reilly is coming off his second straight 20-goal season and third in the last four years. Reinhart, meanwhile, had 17 goals and 47 points in 79 games this season.

Two Florida Panthers defencemen will suit up for Team Canada in Jason Demers and Michael Matheson, according to a report from George Richards of the Miami Herald. Demers played the whole season before sitting out the final game in his first year with the Panthers, recording nine goals and 28 points. Matheson, who finished his rookie season with seven goals and 17 points, was named the top defenceman at last year's tournament.

Panthers' Jonathan Huberdeau will not play for Team Canada in order to get 100 per cent healthy.


Team USA

Brad Galli of WXYZ-TV Detroit reports that Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard will play for Team USA. Howard was 10-11-1 with a .927 save percentage and 2.10 GAA with one shutout this season for the Wings.

Galli also reports that forward Justin Abdelkader plans to have his knee scoped, but wants to play at the World Championships. However, he is "not sure".

According to Galli, forward Dylan Larkin confirmed he will play for USA at the World Championships.

Coming off a strong sophomore season, Jack Eichel said he is unsure at this point if he will play for Team USA, according to a report from the Buffalo News. Eichel missed the first part of the season to injury, but finished with 24 goals and 57 points in 61 games.

Despite coming off a disappointing season, Nick Bjugstad of the Florida Panthers will represent Team USA at the World Championship, according to a report from the Miami Herald. Bjugstad finished with seven goals and seven assists in 54 games this season.

 


TSN's Farhan Lalji reports that Daniel and Henrik Sedin have already informed team Sweden that they will not be playing in the World Championships.

Detroit Red Wings.com's Dana Wakiji reports that forward Henrik Zetterberg will not play for Sweden at the World Championships: "It's over for me. I think it's time for younger kids to have that experience."

Florida Panthers.com writer Jameson Olive reports that forward Jussi Jokinen will not compete for Finland at the World Championships as he is still rehabbing a nagging injury suffered on Apr. 5. The Panthers' Aleksander Barkov (back) also will not play for Finland, according to Harvey Fialkov of Sun Sentinel.

TSN's Sara Orlesky reports Nikolaj Ehlers will play for Denmark at the tournament. Ehlers finished with 25 goals and 64 points in 82 games for the Jets this season.
