Acapulco, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded Australian Open runner-up and French Open champion Maria Sharapova was a first-round winner at the Mexican Open tennis event on Monday.

The former world No. 1 Sharapova was an easy 6-4, 6-1 victor over Shelby Rogers on the hardcourts at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

In other scores, fifth-seeded Lucie Hradecka took down Sesil Karatantcheva 6-3, 6-3, eighth-seeded Madison Brengle topped Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, Bethanie Mattek-Sands made short work of Marcela Zacarias 6-2, 6-1 and Monica Puig ousted Tereza Smitkova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

This week's second seed is last week's Rio champ Sara Errani, a two-time Acapulco titlist.

Slovak Dominika Cibulkova beat American Christina McHale in last year's Acapulco finale.

This week's winner will pocket $43,000.
