SUNDERLAND, England — American businessman Ellis Short has ended his attempt to sell English club Sunderland after talks with a potential buyer collapsed.

"Short will continue his commitment to the club, both financially and personally, moving forward," read a statement from Sunderland, which was relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The northeast club said one of the parties interested in buying Sunderland held "detailed talks" over the last week and was given a timeframe to conclude a deal.

After the conclusion of those discussions, Sunderland said the proposed sale "would not be in the best interests" of the club.

Sunderland has hired Simon Grayson as its manager following the departure of David Moyes last month. Grayson joins from second-tier club Preston North End.
