BRUKSVALLARNA, Sweden -- Canadian cross-country skier Chandra Crawford won a silver medal Sunday in her final tuneup race ahead of the World Cup season.

Crawford, who turns 29 Monday, settled for second place after coming up just short in a sprint finish against Sweden's Ida Ingemarsdotter. Slovenia's Katja Visnar, who led for the first half of the final heat on the 1.2-kilometre track, held on for the bronze.

"The women's program took a lot of risks in training this summer and I feel like that paid off today," Crawford said. "I just attacked and it was exciting out there."

Crawford, from Canmore, Alta., won gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Daria Gaiazova of Banff, Alta., and Perianne Jones, of Almonte, Ont., did not qualify out of their heats.

Alex Harvey of St-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Que., was relegated to the men's B final after placing fourth in his semifinal heat. He finished eighth overall.

Swedish skiers swept the men's podium. Teodor Peterson won gold, Emil Jonsson took the silver and Calle Halvarsson earned bronze.

The World Cup season begins next weekend in Gaellivare, Sweden.
